"Energy is released into the atmosphere when water vapor becomes a liquid through condensation or solid through deposition, or ater becomes ice by freezing.  Energy is absorbed from the atmosphere when ice undergoes melting or becomes vapor directly through sublimation, or when water udergoes evaporation" (Rauber).

Vertical Variation of Atmospheric
Temperature with Altitude

"Temperature decreases with height from the surface to an altitude of about 12 km. Then a remarkable thing happens: about about 12 km, the temperature increases with height.  The temperature begins to decrease again only above an altitude of about 50 km. Temperature increases once again near the fringes of outer space" (Rauber).

"An example of a suface station model showing temperature, dewpoint temperature, pressure, wind speed, wind direction, significant weather, adn cloud cover.  Common symbols for signigicant weather and the convention for plotting cloud cover are also shown" (Rauber).
